Recently, President Trump issued an order which could affect workers in higher education and beyond by suspending or restricting immigration and programs such as Optional Practical Training (OPT). This move is being opposed by numerous higher education and science advocacy organizations, and recently has sparked a sign-on letter by members of the House of Representatives urging the President not to follow through on this threat.
Limiting or restricting the OPT and other non-immigrant visa programs would harm international students and scholars who rely on these opportunities to continue working in the U.S. while developing their skills and research. U.S. universities and the communities they serve benefit greatly from this work, as international scholars also play a critical role in job creation and economic growth. One recent study found that in the 2016-17 academic year alone, international students added almost $37 billion to the U.S. economy and created or supported more than 450,000 jobs.
